How can we not merely survive this time of climate chaos together, but do so with our values of dignity and justice intact? And how on Earth are we supposed to do so in a moment when everything sustaining feels like it's being torn to pieces around us? Join us at the store to launch Adam Greenfield's Lifehouse. Adam Greenfield, author of Radical Technologies, explores how communities under pressure at various times and places in the past have organized themselves to survive hard times, recovering lessons from the Black Panther “survival programs” of the 1970s, the astonishingly effective Occupy Sandy disaster-relief effort, the solidarity networks of crisis-era Greece and the nation-scale non-state polity of Rojava. The book culminates in Adam's proposal for the Lifehouse: a self-organized neighborhood hub built on practices of mutual care and local power, to help shelter us from a future that often feels like it has no place for us or the commitments we cherish. Adam will be joined by A. Naomi Paik, author of Bans, Walls, Raids, Sanctuary and Rightlessness: Testimony and Redress in US Prison Camps since WWII.
